The Robert K. Brown Scholarship

Launched as part of Tropicana’s 20th anniversary celebrations (over 20 years ago), the Robert K. Brown Scholarship is for Black students pursuing a post-secondary or post-graduate education and who have exhibited active involvement in the Black community. This scholarship acts as a crucial link to post-secondary success for deserving Black youth in the GTA. It is funded through generous donor support and serves as a symbol of community recognition and empowerment.
About Robert K. Brown
Tropicana Community Services Organization was started by a group of community-minded people in 1980 with the late Jamaican-born Robert K. Brown as president. Today Tropicana serves thousands of people annually with programs offering support including clinical counseling, employment, development and education, and much more. In Brown’s honour, Tropicana sponsors the Robert K. Brown scholarship to help further the efforts for which the organization was created, to serve disadvantaged youth and their families.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
This scholarship is open to applicants who are:
- Residents of the Greater Toronto Area between the ages of 16 and 29.
- Individuals who are accepted to or are enrolled in any Canadian university or college.
- Persons of Black, African, or Caribbean heritage, or who identify as Black.
- Individuals who have exhibited an active involvement in the Black community.
Family members of Tropicana Community Services employees are eligible for this scholarship.
Scholarship Amount
$2,000.00
How to Apply
Applications require the following information:
- A 500–800-word essay which includes:
- A brief biography.
- An explanation of your long-term goals once your studies are complete.
- Your school transcripts.
- Your academic budget, showing all expected costs and funding. An example budget and template have been provided to assist you.
Example Template - Proof of any relevant achievements such as certificates, photos, news clippings, a confirmation letter from a credible source, etc.
- Two letters of reference from non-relatives.
- A letter of acceptance or a proof of enrollment from a recognized college or university.
- Any other documents that will help support this application.

Scholarship Deadline
The deadline for applying for this award is midnight on June 30 of the current year. If you apply after this deadline, your application will be considered next year.
