The Dr. Danyal Ishaad Bhyat Achievement Award was created to recognize an exceptional and ambitious young individual who intends to pursue studies and personal development while contributing positively to their communities. With this award, the Bhyat family hopes to keep Danyal’s memory, spirit, love of life and people alive.
About Dr. Danyal Ishaad Bhyat
Danyal Bhyat was an exceptional young man, who was full of joy for life and was always able to spark that same joy in others. He was both highly intelligent and very creative; one of his hobbies was custom painting shoes with elaborate designs for friends and family. From a young age he excelled in athletics, competing in track, volleyball, and his favourite, basketball, at very high levels through high school and university. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Western Ontario and went on to study Medicine at Howard University. While completing his residency in anesthesiology at the Cleveland Clinic, his dreams were interrupted when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Danyal underwent numerous surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments, though he found his way back to working at the hospital when he was able. He earned his specialty posthumously. Danyal demonstrated incredible courage throughout his illness and always had great love for his family, especially his brothers and sister-in-law, his niece and nephew, his parents, and his friends. Danyal was very proud of his Guyanese-South African heritages and families. He was an inspiration and role model to many and is missed every day.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
This scholarship is open to applicants who are:
- Residents of the Greater Toronto Area.
- Between the ages of 16-29.
- A person who identifies as having a BIPOC heritage.
- Able to demonstrate a past achievement and/or future potential in an academic, athletic, or artistic career path.
- Able to showcase their participation in school activities and/or with their community at large.
- Able to exhibit character and social duty through involvement in their community.
- Able to demonstrate a financial need by providing a budget.
Scholarship Amount
$2,300.00
How to Apply
Applications require the following information:
- A 500–800-word essay which includes:
- A brief biography.
- An explanation of your long-term goals once your studies are complete.
- Your school transcripts.
- Your academic budget, showing all expected costs and funding. An example budget and template have been provided to assist you.
Example Template - Proof of any relevant achievements such as certificates, photos, news clippings, a confirmation letter from a credible source, etc.
- Two letters of reference from non-relatives.
- A letter of acceptance or a proof of enrollment from a recognized college or university.
- Any other documents that will help support this application.

Scholarship Deadline
The deadline for applying for this award is midnight on June 30 of the current year. If you apply after this deadline, your application will be considered next year.
