Stop Now and Plan for Black, African & Caribbean Kids (SNAP BACK)
Tropicana Community Services’ SNAP BACK program is funded by the provincial initiative, Services for Black Children, Youth and Families (formerly Ontario Black Youth Action Plan), to support Black, African, and Caribbean children, ages 6 to 11 dealing with behaviours that may result in conflict at home, school or in the community. As a licensed affiliate with the Child Development Institute, Tropicana uses the evidence-based, cognitive-behavioural SNAP® model to deliver a culturally appropriate program for the Black, African, and Caribbean community.
How Does the SNAP BACK Program Work?
Staff work with each family to assess challenges and develop action plans. With the goal of preventing future anti-social behaviour and reducing the chances of conflict, services include:
- Individual and family counselling to address their experiences, stressors, and challenges, including anti-Black racism, in achieving positive emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
- Crisis intervention
- 13-week SNAP BACK Boys or Girls Groups
- 13-week SNAP BACK Parenting Group
- School advocacy and support for educators
- Support and accompaniment to navigate systems
- Information sharing and advocacy on rights, options, and available services
